As in the rest of Brazil, also among the indigenous group Guarani Kaiowá the evangelical church has been gaining ground. This mini-documentary travels across villages in Mato Grosso do Sul to expose the increasingly frequent violence committed by evangelical groups against traditional shaman. On the background, we can discover the contrast between evangelical cults and shamanic rituals, and between ancestral leaderships and new political actors, such as the shepherds. But we can also understand the relationship existing between religions and disputes over the land.
Joana Moncau and Gabriela Moncau are filmmakers and journalists. In 2013-2014 they worked as TeleSUR correspondents in São Paulo covering, among other issues, the June manifestations of 2013, the Football World Cup, and the 2014 Brazilian presidential elections. They also participated in larger journalistic works, and produced documentaries for international producers such as Muzungu TV and Belly of the Beast. Their first documentary together was Enquanto a liberdade não canta. A redução da maioridade penal. In this independent work, created for the no-profit information platform DesInformémonos, they showed moments of life, opinions and dreams of youngsters in conflict with their own parents and with Brazilian laws.
